Once upon a time, there was a watchmaker like no other, whose simple yet ingenious inventions revolutionised the world in which he lived. A man who made chronometric accuracy easy to replicate through industrial processes. And yet, John Arnold should not be judged by his creations alone, as they represent a superficial insight into his world. All the more so, as the inventor helped to mitigate some of the hazards faced by mariners as they navigated the oceans, by developing reliable and accurate timepieces.

At the same time – and this is why his innovations were so important – he gave navigators the means to know their location anywhere in the world by effortlessly calculating their longitude. This allowed them to set off in search of new lands while minimising the risk of getting lost.

When we consider their work in the socio-economic context of their time, we realise how much these visionaries contributed to the new industrialised era. Most of these inventions are still used in watchmaking, testifying to the immense influence of John Arnold and his successors: George Graham, John Harrison, Thomas Mudge, Abraham-Louis Breguet and many others.
